Who: Find Someone in the US

AMA Physician Select:  The American Medical Association offers this free database to the general public.   One can find a physician by name or by medical specialty.  "AMA Physician Select provides information on virtually every licensed physician in the United States and its possessions, including more than 690,000 doctors of medicine (MD) and doctors of osteopathy or osteopathic medicine (DO)."  AMA's disclaimer warns that they have no way to guarantee the credentials or accuracy of this information.

Anywho.com:  This site is provided by AT&T.  One can search for a person or a business.  Some extra services this website offers includes a "reverse look-up" search and a "Toll Free" search.

Biography.com:  Search 25,000 different biographies of the most influential people past and present.  The Biographies range from a few short paragraphs to a page.  A picture and related information and people are provided for most entries.

Nobel Prize Winners:  Learn about the Nobel Prize Winners since 1901.  Each Nobel Winner is given a brief biography and their Nobel Lecture. 

Switchboard.com:  This site offers both a "white pages" and "yellow pages" directory which one may search.  One may also search for products.  Driving directions and maps are provided by "Maps On Us."

What:

Better Business Bureau:  The Better Business Bureau allows you to check out a company or charity to see if any complaints have been filed.  You can also file a complaint with the BBB.  Articles on consumer information can also be accessed online.  Go to the Delaware BBB website.

BigCharts.com:  BigCharts is an "easy-to-use investment research web site providing access to professional level research tools like interactive charts, quotes, industry analysis, intraday stock screeners, as well as market news & commentary."

Car Values: National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) provides an online version to their print guide to car values.   Prices for new cars, used cars, classic cars, RVs, motorcycle, marine craft, aircraft and manufactured homes can be found.  Years range for each category, but most go back at least 20 years or more. (Library gets print copies - at Reference Desk.)

CNN Sports Illustrated:  Get the scores from the latest games in baseball, football, tennis and more.  One can also read sports related articles.

Consumer Price Index:  The Bureau of Labor Statistics provide detailed CPI data.  Information can be broken down by region (Wilmington is in the Philadelphia region), month and year.  Other items of interest on the site are an "Inflation calculator," "CPI statistics going back to 1913," and a "CPI Fact Sheet."

Consumer Reports Online:  Consumer Reports has some of their reports on various products online for free.  About half of the reports are for subscribers only.  The A-Z index clearly shows which reports can be accessed for free.  (The Library has print copies - at Reference Desk.)

Core Documents of US Democracy: Maintained by GPO Access.  "To provide American citizens direct online access to the basic Federal Government documents that define our democratic society, a core group of current and historical Government publications is being made available for free, permanent, public access via the GPO Access service. These titles contain information which is vital to the democratic process and critical to an informed electorate. They support the public's right to know about the essential activities of their Government."

Currency Converter:  Oanda is a company based in Zurich, Switzerland.  One can input a certain money amount for one country and convert it to another.  The default rate is an "interbank rate" which can be changed.  They have a disclaimer regarding the accuracy of their information.

Delawareonline.com:  For current, local news access The News Journal online.  One can search The News Journal classifieds for jobs and real estate.  One can also search for obituaries and wedding/anniversary notices for the past two years. 

Distance Calculator:  This tool calculates the distance between two places "as the crow flies".  This is a commercial site offered by Indo.com, an Indonesian company.

Delaware Statistics:  A list of links to sites with Delaware Statistics.  Created by the University of Delaware.

Edmunds:  Edmund's offers price guides for new and used automobiles -- including dealer invoices.  Edmund's also offers great advice on buying a new or used car and financing.  (The print publications can be located in the Wilmington Library at the Reference Desk.)

Firstgov:  The United States government provides this site to help citizens gain access to government websites and information.  You can search government websites or browse through a list of topics. 

FreeTranslation:  Free translation offers a "gist" translation of any text up to 40,000 worlds.  Translates from English into Spanish, French, Italian, German, and Portuguese and vice versa.  Machine translations are not fail-safe and they recommend a human translator for any important translation work you need done. 

Healthfinder.gov:  A government site that allows you to search for quality health information.

HowStuffWorks.com:  This commercial site offers easy to understand articles on how things work.  Topics range from clocks to mummies and everything in-between. 

InfoNation: The United Nations provides this site allowing access to statistics for countries all over the world.  Categories for each country include "Geography: largest city, average temperature, urban growth rate," "Economy: currency, unemployment," "Population: female/male ration, infant mortality, population growth," and "Social Indicators: life expectancy, illiteracy, homicides, telephones."   Go to the United Nations home page for more information.

Guinnessworldrecords.com:  Access the Guinness World Records covering such categories as the "human body," "living planet," "fame and money," "sports," and more.  Before you can get to the actual records, you will need to have the "Flash 5 Plugin" installed on your computer.  (Guinness provides the download if you do not have it yet.)  They also require you to sign in with your name and an e-mail address. 

National Center for Health Statistics:  Find US Health statistics from mortality rates, to birth, marriage, and divorce from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Find out where to write for Vital Records (death, birth, and marriage certificates) from the different states.

Oomli.net:  Delaware Labor Statistics offered by the Department of Labor.  Oomli has statistics on Delaware unemployment rates, weekly earnings, Consumer Price Index and more.

Periodic Table of Elements:  A resource for Elementary, Middle School, and High School students.  One can click on an element to learn its properties, history, and uses.

Weather.com: The Weather Channel offers current temperatures and up to ten day forecasts.  A zip code search allows one to get local weather forecasts for anywhere in the US.  Monthly averages and records can also be found by zip code.  A temperature converter from Fahrenheit to Celsius is provided.

Time: Find the correct time of day with "Official U.S Time." This information is provided by a Department of Commerce agency, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and its military counterpart, the U. S. Naval Observatory (USNO). (Requires JAVA).

Mapquest: Mapquest provides driving directions, maps and traffic reports.  Commercial site connected with AOL.
