Medical Libraries

Information Resources and Services

The Medical Libraries currently subscribe to 530 journals and maintain current book collections numbering over 5,000 volumes. Library services include a Clinical Medical Librarian (CML) program, reference and literature search services, current awareness services, interlibrary loan services, library orientation and education programs. Orientations to the libraries, as well as demonstrations of computerized library services are, available.

Interlibrary Loan

The Medical Libraries can obtain journal articles, books and reports from local library resources and regional or national biomedical libraries. Requests for journal articles or books not available in either hospital library can be easily communicated by email, by mail, by phone or in person. Interlibrary Loan/Photocopy Request Forms are available in the libraries and electronically on the Christiana Care Intranet (Inet). Computerized Literature Retrieval

Christiana Care personnel may request computerized searches of the medical and nursing literature at any of our three libraries. Requests may also be sent using online forms, fax, email or by phone. Christiana Care librarians have access to all clinical medical and health care databases and Internet resources relied on by health care professionals throughout the world.

Shared Computer Workstations

Computers are available in each hospital library for use by residents, nurses, allied health professionals and other Christiana Care employees for patient care and hospital business. The computers have access to the Internet for self-service literature searching in medicine, nursing and health administration. In addition, MicroMedex software for obtaining poison and pharmaceutical information, full-text reference books and databases of full-text journals are available. These resources may be accessed through the Christiana Care Intranet choosing the Medical Library from the Christiana Care INet home page drop down box under Education. Contact your hospital library for more specific information about using these databases.

Book Purchasing

Medical and nursing books for personal and departmental use may be purchased at a 15 percent discount through the hospital libraries. Please contact Roberta Repetti at Christiana Hospital Library, 733-1118 or call the Wilmington Hospital Library, 428-2201.

Lending Policies

Books in the hospital libraries are available on a one-month, one-time renewable loan period. Journals and reference books do not circulate. Audiovisuals may be borrowed for up to three days. Borrowing privileges at the hospital libraries are limited to current Medical-Dental Staff, employees, residents, nurses and medical students on clinical rotations at Christiana Care. There are no fines for overdue materials borrowed from the Medical Libraries; however we expect the prompt return of borrowed materials to ensure availability to all. Overdue notices are sent out as a courtesy only. Fines of $1.00/day will be charged for overdue materials borrowed from other libraries.

Photocopying

Photocopying library materials is self-service. Use must conform to U.S. Copyright Law. There is no charge to Christiana Care staff for self-service copying related to hospital business or patient care. The charge for copies made for personal use is 10 cents per page.

Junior Board Cancer Resource Library

Christiana Care Medical Libraries Statement of Purpose

The Medical Libraries and Community Health Library are committed to providing on-time, current, accurate knowledge-based and customer-driven services in support of excellence in patient care, education, research and hospital administration. The libraries will, within limits of available resources, use all technologies to provide vitally needed health information to benefit physicians, hospital staff, patients/family members, community members and all others whom we serve.
